Snoring & Sleep Apnoea

Snoring is a common complaint, affecting up to 45% of adults and is a sign of airway obstruction. Snoring can be a source of great frustration for people sleeping close by and can disrupt the quality of sleep of the snorer, and others, leading to excessive daytime sleepiness.

Sleep Apnoea- Snoring can also be a sign of sleep apnoea which is a serious medical disorder linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.

The above conditions have been shown to be linked to more serious health related concerns like high blood pressure, stroke and heart attack. Similarly the effects of sleep disturbance can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness, which has been shown to markedly increase the risk of motor vehicle accidents along with home and work related injuries.

Dentists have an important role in the screening and management of sleep

disorders, including snoring and sleep apnoea through oral appliance therapy.

Oral Appliance therapy is a simple and effective way to treat sleep apnoea. The appliance is designed to position the lower jaw forward and help prevent the collapse of the soft tissues that obstruct the airway during sleep.
