Sports Dentistry

We believe that sport plays an important part in a person’s life. However, anyone who participates in sports is at risk of injury. The Sports Medicine Association reports that 50% of children experience some form of dental injury. Therefore, it is important for you to protect your teeth and facial bone structure.

Dentist Coorparoo believes that Precaution is better than Cure and being proactive encourages players to get proper training, have appropriate equipment, safe playing areas and certainly the properly fitted personal protective equipment.

In contact sports, mouth guards play a vital role in injury prevention. A well fitted mouth guard helps in absorbing the shock experienced by a blow to the face, which might otherwise result in an injury to the mouth or jaw. Teeth and jaw related injuries can lead to long and potentially expensive treatments but a custom made mouth guard covers teeth and gums to prevent and reduce injury to the teeth, arches, lips and gums.

Soft drinks, cordials and carbonated energy drinks are high in sugar content and can cause dental caries. We encourage our patients to brush regularly and eat healthy food.

Regular screening by an experienced dentist eliminates the risk of potential dental problems. A pre-season dental examination ascertains players’ teeth are in good shape and there is no dental condition which without suitable treatment could increase the likelihood of facial and dental injuries.

Mouth Guards

This is where precaution becomes more important than prevention. We recommend wearing a custom made mouth guard while playing any contact sport. Mouth guards reduce the risk of dental trauma. A mouth guard:

  • Cushions teeth against impact.
  • Protects against jaw joint injuries.
  • Protects against soft tissues injury.
